Henley-On-Thames with Dolly!
Hello!
So we are here in Henley-On-Thames with Dolly! We are headed down to our last sit (Bel in Henfield) in a couple of days. Henley-On-Thames is a wonderful place, with lots of walkways along the river. It is like living in a post card! Dolly lives just minutes walk away from the town square.
Dolly has been a wonderful little dog! She lives in the Hamilton House, on New Street. Hamilton House initial construction dates back to the 1700's! It is really a grand home with an awesome garden! 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 3 sitting rooms, a library on three levels! We loved the ambiance of the home!
She was so good for bath time as well, no fuss no troubles!
Henley-On-Thames' origins apparently date back to Roman occupation times. Today it is renowned for rowing with Henley Royal Regatta taking place each summer. There are a number of rowing clubs along the banks near the town and there are walkways all along that you can stroll down and take in the river, the water fowl, and boats and the rowers. There are a lot of early risers/rowers! I was often out walking before 6am and there were always rowers on the water!
At that time of the morning, the river is very quiet and you can hear the oars quietly dipping into the water! With the occasional call from one or the other of the numerous water fowl, and a mist across the river, it is like you are inside a painting, or living a poem!
We have strolled all about the town, taking in the history of the place. We have ended up stopping in at the Catherine Wheel a few times to quench our thirst from all our walking about! This hotel/pub is right in the heart of the town. The origins of the Wheel date back to the 1400s! We stayed in the hotel the first night we got to Henley. We enjoyed the atmosphere of the old building and had no complaints about the room!
On Thursdays, there is a farmer's market every Thursday that we were able to take in a couple of times. It's not the biggest market we have been to, but the fresh fruit and produce was good! We mostly just enjoyed market atmosphere and both times the sun was out!
We had a visit from Lindsay and hubby Brendan! We know Lindsay from our years in St. Albert and our many visits to the Crown & Tower pub there! Lindsay was one of our servers, and became a friend! She is currently living in the Chiswik area of London. We had a wonderful visit and stroll along the river. Henley is not unknown to Lindsay and Brendan and they have been her before! They brought along Louis! Lindsay's 14 year old pup she brought with her from Canada! Louis and Dolly got along famously! We had a great visit that included a cake freshly made by Munchie with plums she picked up at the farmers market!
On one of our walks, we came upon an iconic vehicle that has a special place in our son, Nolan's heart. A DeLorean! Although this one did not have the flux capacitor, needed for time travel, it was still very cool! We met the owner, Blair. A young entrepreneur who has his own vehicle restoration business! We sent a photo of Brenda checking it out (with the ghosts of Doc Brown and Marty) to Nolan!
We had a great stay here in Henley-On-Thames with Dolly. I'll miss her lying across my feet as I blog away at the table!
We are head out tomorrow, south to Henfield, I'll post again once we are settled there!
Cheers to All!
